At its most basic, an EV charger pulls an electrical current from the grid and delivers that electricity to the vehicle, using either a standard wall socket or a dedicated ‘Commando’ style EV outlet. Both electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles require an EV charger to keep the battery full, just like any chargeable device or electronic equipment.
There are currently three different types of charge points available:
Wireless chargers are currently being trialled in other countries, but they are not available in the UK yet.
It’s not (yet) a legal requirement to have EV charging points in an existing building… however, a change of regulation affecting all new commercial buildings in England came into force in June 2022 whereby all new commercial properties and properties undergoing renovations with over ten parking spaces must have at least one charging point.
There must also be cable routes in place for 20% of the total number of spaces, so there is the option to add extra charging points easily in the future.
You can safely assume, therefore, that mandatory EV charging capability for all commercial premises is coming.
If you’d like a consultative call (rather than a sales pitch) to explore the options that best suit your situation and needs, share your answers to just a handful of questions below so that we can better understand your specific requirements and goals.
We’ll also immediately send you our booklet ‘Renewable Energy: Buzzword or Business Asset’ which explains our process, and why it’s not just possible but typical for us to help clients just like you, achieve your carbon and energy cost reduction goals without needing to resource or fund the CapEx.
